If you don’t feel safe at home, where can you feel safe? Unfortunately, home invasion is a very real thing and many homeowners find themselves unable to sleep easy as they worry about burglars breaking into their home. In many ways, the thing that stands between a home invader and you and your belongings is your entry door.

In a 2017 investigative report done by KTVB 7 in Boise, Idaho(1), it was found that most prison inmates arrested for burglary claimed that they got into the house through an unlocked window or door. Of those who broke into homes in which the door was locked, most claimed that they kicked the door down rather than breaking a window, so as to keep from getting cut up by the breaking glass or rousing anyone with the sound of breaking glass.

So if you want your home to be more secure, it’s smartest to begin with your entry door.

Always Lock the Door At Night

Some homeowners prefer to have the door locked at all times when it’s closed, unless a family member is just outside and might walk back in soon. However, others unlock the door in the morning and leave it unlocked all day. On a nice, summer day, you might even leave the door open (with the screen door closed, of course). That’s all well and good when everyone is at home, as long as you remember to lock the door at the end of the day. Unfortunately, 7% of Americans don’t lock their door(2), and we’ve seen the results.

Make sure to lock the door before you go to bed for the night. Your door should always be locked if you’re not there to watch it in order to deter home invaders. If you still feel uneasy, you might invest in a deadbolt. The same rule applies if you leave the house for work or to go out with friends.

The Right Material For Security: Fiberglass

If you want a truly secure door, you should also make sure you have the right kind of entry door. While wood doors can be heavy, they also tend to weaken over time while being exposed to the elements. Steel doors are much heavier and harder to kick in, but they can dent under pressure. Lately, fiberglass has been the option that has won out when it comes to door security. It’s as heavy or heavier than wood and steel, and it never splits, cracks, or warps, so it will remain strong for decades to come.

It’s Not the Door, It’s the Frame

Sometimes, it’s not the door itself that makes your home vulnerable to home invaders, it’s the frame. Most door frames are wood and can weaken over time. Burglars spot these vulnerable parts and apply the weight of their kick to them, compromising the door frame and causing the door to fly out of it into the house.

So it’s not much of a surprise that you can also have a smart lock. Electronic locks can be used to activate or deactivate the deadbolt through use of a code. You can also use fingerprint-activated locks or bluetooth recognition locks that identify you and release the lock when you arrive. Customization allows you to set up a program that would change the passcode for the deadbolt depending on the day or the time of day.

The Right Installation

Your door can also be vulnerable to home invasion if it wasn’t installed properly. If the door was too short or was installed at an angle, it already does little to protect your home.
