In Preparation ~ If You’re Hanging These Doors in an Existing Door Frame: Before any new door can be installed, the existing door must be removed. Remove the existing door by tapping out the hinge pins. If the current doors have been installed with a 7/8″ +/- reveal between the door stop and the existing doors, you might be in luck – when removing the existing doors, use a pry bar or a hammer to remove the door stop and prepare the existing door frame; by eliminating the existing door stops, this will give the new doors a much wider pocket to be installed. If the door stops and trim cannot be removed or you’re not interested in making a mess, after the hinges have been released and the existing door has been removed, take one of the new doors and lay it in place in the door frame to see if it will fit. To be less obtrusive, the door must be able to swing without making contact with the framing, trim, or other doors. If they don’t, the existing door frame might have to be adjusted for plumb, leveling, or the stop will have to be notched out to make room for the extra girth of the new doors.

Let’s face it, regardless of what accessories and color trends say, architectural style gives guests their first impression of your home, often even before the interior. And if what “they” say about first impressions being lasting ones is really true, there’s no better way to present your home than by incorporating the charm and grace of Craftsman style designs. If the budget won’t allow for a complete architectural makeover, start by making a small change in one area and work your way around from there. 2.1. Tools and Materials Needed

You have to obtain the following materials: the lamp, the base bracket or a medallion, the support collar with screws, the decoration for the bridle (a wide cap), the screw protector, decorative chains if necessary, a pack of sticks, and two metal hooks if necessary. And finally, screws, washers, nuts, and bolts.

The important thing is not to undertake renovations that are beyond our skills. An ideal project for beginners or with virtually no experience is certainly the installation of a lamp or a chandelier. It will take little time; it can be done in a few hours on a weekend, it does not require a high degree of complexity, and you will enjoy a very high satisfaction of the results obtained. It will not be necessary to disassemble anything, and if you do it yourself, it will be very cheap, since you can save the cost of the professional who could charge you it.

2.2. Measuring and Sizing

Measure from the center of the hinge screw hole to the top and bottom edges of the door hinge. Find the full-length measurement of the existing hinge to get the height. Measure from the center of the hole to the top edge of the toe, then find the full-length measurement, so you can locate the knobs and bolts. Taking measurements inside the opening is recommended. Measure the sides by taking the wall thickness at the top, middle, and bottom. The door may require a deeper door frame than in the traditional Craftsman design. Make sure the frame of the door opening doesn’t require trimming if a prehung fixed door for Craftsman home front door design is available. Once we have decided to install a new door and sidelight and have taken the necessary measurements for the installation, we must purchase a door made of the correct material, in the right size, and with required features. Now we can buy with certainty, sure that we have done our homework.

To begin, you must determine the correct size door slab for your opening. This involves measuring the existing rough opening, then purchasing a new slab that is sized accordingly. Not all quarter-lite sidelights are the same size, and you must carefully measure the thickness and width to properly plan for your doors. If you are measuring a prehung door, you must first determine whether your current slab will work. Ideally, the new door slab will be about a 1/2″ inch narrower than the door frame of the existing prehung door, and about 1″ to 1 1/2″ inches wider than the frame around the top and sides.

Section 3: Installation Process

Once you’ve finished installing the upper jam check the door. Does it open and close? Does it now rub in a certain area? This is a very important step. Make sure that the door works before proceeding to the next step! Have any questions? Make sure that the door functions to your satisfaction before closing up the door frame. Now that the upper jam was in place and the door opened and closed, it was time to square up the rest of the door jam. Using a level and keeping the opposite sides level and square was a tad tricky but with Kreg clamps, it wasn’t so bad. The jam sides came with a groove scribed on one side for a 1/2 inch plywood alignment strip. The original Craftsman home components were built out of 1×6 pine, so I expected my new Kreg jam to be intense quality. It was – phew!

The next step was to install the upper jam. It is vital that this piece be installed correctly and the door is placed square and plumb. Check out the measurements from the illustration above. When you zero in on the exact measurements, measure again, measure twice, measure three times – get the picture? If you’re lucky, this piece has been installed at the factory and you’re good to go. If not, measure exactly, then measure 47 more times. Are the repeated measurements the same?

The process to install the door consists of removing your existing door, installing the new upper jam, placing and squaring the door, and installing the rest of your new door jam. My door came from Home Depot with the jam preinstalled. My first task was to prep my existing door jam to receive the new door. I began by removing the inner and outer door stops on each side and the bottom of the jam. I also removed the threshold. I maintained my warranty so I can’t rip out the entire war bowed jam at this time.

3.1. Removing Old Door

Have a helpful partner measure the hinges on the old door for reference on your new door. If you have electronic tools, simply place the original hinges against the new door, measure top and bottom, and then measure from the top hinge to the top of the door, and the bottom hinge to the bottom of the door. Turn off any option that keeps the tape oddly tight, then mark the hinges using a sharp box cutter or a chisel. This will give you new, clean lines to follow. Cleanup of the area is crucial. Small pieces of wood, locks, and paint chips tracked any scale between the door’s edges will cause the door to fill out incorrectly – and it will sag. If you are replacing an original door, there is probably a groove at the bottom of the door where it slips into the threshold. If your new door does not have this groove, you should use the routed door to create grooves in the door so that it will sit flush.

The first step in your new door installation is to carefully remove the old door. Be careful! Many older doors are quite heavy and may have weak frames – make sure you have help and watch your fingers – it’s a good idea to use gloves when handling the old door. Old doors, especially the glass, can be very fragile inside the frames. While carefully removing the trim, check that the frame isn’t attached to other parts of the house. This could damage the exterior of the wall, so don’t force the trim loose that isn’t already separating from the door frame. Remove shims or cut any nails that are holding the door in place and tap the old door out. Watch your fingers! Setting the old door next to the new door helps avoid any confusion once your new door is painted and ready to be installed. An additional ¼ inch should be removed from each side of the opening to account for the new door’s thickness.

3.2. Installing New Craftsman Style Door

Installing the door frame There are a number of door frame materials that are commonly used; for this process, we will be assuming a wood jamb where pilot holes can be put in to accept the screws. Also, as an aside, make sure you use new screws and not the ones provided with your door unless the company specifically addressed that the screws needed to be of a different type. This step will have been completed for you if you purchased a pre-hung option. With the door standing, test the fit of the door against the frame. It should be snug; of course, it should swing easily and shut easily, though. If the wall is out of square or one of the jamb sides is not perfectly straight (for instance, if one of the other jamb sides curves in at an angle after decreasing the gap), you may need to remove the door and using additional shims, straighten the gaps between the door and frame. Trim any excess shims if needed. If you must secure the frame in place, have a friend help you hold the shims and door in place as you use a small level to verify that the door and jamb are plumb and square. Use wood shims between the jamb and wall to help brace the jamb in its final, plumb position. Clamp or nail the shims to the jamb; double up the shims to make the brace even more secure if you find it is necessary. Once in place, add screws through the shims and jamb. Make sure the shims on the strike side of the door are higher at the top than at the bottom, with a wedge shape from bottom to top.

Installing new Craftsman style door The installation of your new Craftsman style door will proceed largely as the installation of any other entry door. However, during testing and packing, original doors can sometimes shift slightly, and it is possible that a few minor adjustments to the door or frame may be necessary before completing the installation.

To help deepen or augment the existing patina of your door, additional coats of a topcoat product can be applied. Decide if a clear coat product is needed, or if this would be a space to use your existing products for maintenance. Always refer to product labels for all manufacturer recommendations on product application guidelines. Follow any instructions carefully. Consult with a professional if you feel you cannot deal with the removal of any products or if you are uncertain about the application of new ones. If you use a small amount of paint or stain, be sure to discard it according to your local regulations.

Avoid the use of harsh chemicals or strong abrasives. Keeping the door away from extreme heat, moisture, and direct sunlight can help delay the aging of any finish (paint or wood topcoat). Starting with a good preparation will also help protect your door longer. Remember, a well-maintained door will enhance your home’s charm for years to come.

With all surfaces, annually go over the door. Take care of any maintenance that may be needed and perform any of the cleaning options where necessary. It is good practice as well to make this part of a complete home checkup to ensure your entire residence receives the care it needs. Reviewing this guide yearly can help pinpoint where attention is needed before it becomes more involved or costlier. In addition, in the case of a stained door, a light application of the same topcoat may contain UV inhibitors.

4.1. Cleaning and Maintenance Tips

For severe iron stains, commercial cleaner can be used. Do not use abrasive cleaners or cleaning agents containing abrasive particles to clean the glass or decorative elements. They can cause scratches and damage. You must use a sealant with a permanent deaerating glass. Not all wall and glass panels are made to the same standards. They can have a completely different composition and structure. To avoid any damage, each section must have a gasket designed specifically. For hinged doors and wall jammers, the corresponding roller track must be aligned. Fully open sliding panels, and the corresponding jammers must be in the fully closed position. Equal gaps must be maintained between each panel and each wall at each corner. Except in the hinge conditions, this minimalist appearance is necessary for the proper functioning of the door.

After installation, use a warm, soapy solution and a soft, non-abrasive cloth for cleaning. If a squeegee is used to remove excess moisture, surface water spots are less likely to form. Regular cleaning prevents buildup on the fixtures and glass with mild dishwashing liquids. Immediately rinse with clean water and dry all surfaces to wipe away excess water for maintenance. Force is not recommended when opening and closing doors and hinged panel. Circuit personality design and heavy use can lead to personal damage. Hardware should be immediately replaced if a problem occurs. All moving parts should be lubricated at least one year after installation.
